Learn more about Triacastela, Lugo
Triacastela is a municipality located in the province of Lugo (Galicia, Spain) in the region of Sarria and on the Camino de Santiago. HISTORY: In the mid-nineteenth century it was called Triancastelaen, in various privileges it is cited with the name of “Triacastelle” or “Triacastelle Nova”, other documents including the oldest pilgrim guide the “Codex Calixtino ”figure“ Triacastellus ”. Several kings and members of the nobility had a relationship with the town. The ultimate benefactor was King Alfonso IX (1188-1230), who is said to have even spent some time there. In the place of San Pedro de Ermo, there was the monastery of San Pedro and San Pablo that was founded by Count Gatón del Bierzo. In 919, King Ordoño II of León and his wife, Queen Elvira Menéndez, confirmed to the monastery and its abbot the donations that Count Gatón, the queen’s grandfather, had made and increased them with books and jewelry. He also granted the monastery the town of Ranimiro. (Source: Wikipedia)
